Repairman Certificate – Experimental Aircraft Builder
What is the rating?
The FAA’s Repairman Certificate for Experimental Aircraft Builders authorizes an individual to perform condition inspections on their own amateur-built aircraft. This certificate is issued to the primary builder of the aircraft and is valid for the lifetime of the aircraft unless surrendered, suspended, or revoked. FAA Experimental Aircraft Builder page
What can you do with it?
With this certificate, you are authorized to: Eligibility, Privileges, & Limitations
- Perform condition inspections on the aircraft you constructed.
- Determine if the aircraft is in a condition for safe operation.
- Sign off on the annual condition inspection required for the aircraft.
What can’t you do with it?
Holding this certificate does not authorize you to:
- Perform maintenance or alterations on aircraft you did not build.
- Supervise or perform major repairs or alterations.
- Perform condition inspections on aircraft you did not build.
What are the requirements?
For this rating, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be the primary builder of the aircraft.
- Demonstrate to the FAA your ability to perform condition inspections and determine if the aircraft is in a condition for safe operation.
- Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident.

- With your local FSDO, complete FAA Form 8130-12.
