A Different Kind of Calling
My story begins when I joined the US Navy in 2018 at the age of 19 as a Religious Programs Specialist—often referred to as a Chaplain’s Assistant.
Life as a Chaplain’s Assistant was not what I had imagined. I found myself attached to the 4th Marine Division Combat Engineering Battalion, mixed into a platoon of Marines, and I quickly realized this was not my calling.
At that time, I had no idea what I wanted to do—but I knew I needed to make a change.
Finding My Wings
In 2020, I met with a career counselor and changed my job to Aviation Machinist’s Mate—an aircraft engine mechanic. It became one of the best decisions of my life.
Within six months, I was trained and sent to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, where I spent the next three years serving aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, working on F/A-18 Super Hornets—and I loved it.
I had discovered a passion for aviation.
A New Mission
At the end of my tour of duty, I chose to continue my aviation career on the civilian side. In November 2024, I separated from the Navy and returned to my family home in Alabama to pursue my Airframe & Powerplant certification.
I ordered test prep books, took a two-week course for hands-on experience in general aviation, and by February 2025, I completed my exams and earned my certification.
Through this process, I saw the need for a consolidated guide to demystify the FAA certification process. Many aspiring mechanics feel overwhelmed and unsure where to start—and I wanted to change that.
I believe the freedom of flight should be accessible to anyone willing to learn and build.
