Inspection Authorization (IA)

What is this rating?

The inspection authorization IA certificate is issued to airframe and powerplant mechanics with at least 3 years of work experience to perform more in depth and comprehensive maintenance and inspections. IA holders must complete recurrent training and written tests every 2 years to maintain this certification.

What can you do with it?
With this rating you will be able to supervise, and return to service major repairs or alterations.You will also be qualified to conduct annual inspections of aircraft and components.
What can’t you do with it?
Holding an IA you will not be permitted to return to service major repairs or alterations that you personally performed, nor will you be allowed to perform inspections on aircraft or components that you have worked on unless another IA holder is involved.
What is the certification process?
For this rating you will need to meet the following requirements: 14 CFR 65.91 Inspection Authorization (IA)
  • You must already hold both an Airframe and Powerplant certificate with at least 3 years of work experience as an A&P mechanic.
  • You must have actively worked as an A&P mechanic for at least 2 consecutive years prior to the date of application.
  • You must have a fixed base of operations where you will be available either in person or by telephone during a normal working week but it doesn’t need to be where you will exercise your inspection authority.
  • You must have access to the needed equipment, facilities, and inspection data for aircraft and components.
  • You must complete training on regulations, procedures, and inspection practices. This training will be conducted by an FAA-certified organization such as schools, repair stations, or maintenance providers. To locate a school use the FAA Training Facility Locator tool. After finding a school nearby you will need to contact them because not all schools offer IA specific training.
  • You must be recommended by an FAA inspector or qualified organization
Get your authorization to test:
  • Before you can take the test you will need to make an appointment with and visit your local flight standards district office FSDO. FAA FSDO Locator
  • With your local FSDO you will complete FAA form 8610-1
Take written exam:
This written exam is a 50 question multiple choice knowledge based exam that must be passed with a score of 70% or higher. You will have 2 hours to complete this exam. You can prepare for the written exam utilizing books, prep ware, and videos linked below. (study links) If you fail this exam you must wait for at least 90 days before retesting. The oral exam is a verbal session of question and answer between the examiner and the applicant that requires the applicant to provide answers without the use of reference documentation.
